Intro to street racing in Pakistan

Street racing a form of unsanctioned and illegal motor racing which takes place on public roads. It can be either spontaneous or well planned and coordinated races planned in advance. Originated prior to the 1930s in the United States.

Today, in the age of technology the automotive industry has reached its limits by getting maximum power from the fuel efficient engines. Pakistan is a third world country but still drag racing has become a popular sport and is getting popular day by day.The hunger for racing is huge, it brought adrenalin rush so powerful and sedating that it has developed into passion for the masses. The trend of car customization and modification is   rapidly growing in the teen generation of our country. These motorsport enthusiasts gather on weekends or special events to compete with different cars. The trend of this sport in Pakistan started after the launch of the movie Fast and the Furious in 2001, the movie that shows exotic, muscle and tuner cars with eye catching colors and high speed engines.Further more car racing games like Need for Speed by EA Sports was a trigger to make racing as a hobby for the young generation.

The initial start

Karachi is known as the city of most active drag racers, initially the youth started with Honda Civics but as the time passed they moved on the best race cars in the world like;

Toyota Supra
Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution
Nissan Skyline GTR
Subaru Imprezza Sti
Mazda Rx 7

The International Tuning Garages have admired and appreciated the way we have built our cars and tuned them to the next level with the limited technical resources available.

Pakistan is the land of talented people from Karachi to Kyber you will find the best of the best but the dilema is that government doesnot recognize drag racing as a proper sport hence it is labeled as illegal street racing. The drag racing scene is done privately on roads with the least number of traffic and people unfortunately in most of the casses it is just
restricted to 400 meters of pure entertainment.

No matter how many precautions we take accidents are inevitable, when it is done without proper arrangement. Some people saw this as an opportunity so they took the initiative and started  to arrange drag racing events privately. The only solution is to take it off from the streets by providing proper venues otherwise there is no end to street racing.

The racing events and hope

The rare car racing events in Pakistan have less than satisfactory arrangements for public. Events like TDCP in Lahore and Hamara Karachi event apart from the cars everything was below par sadly though they were backed by government. Police was unable to control the crowd. It is implicit that drag racing is a dangerous sport and people who race are risking their lives in the same way because there is no proper venue, stands and safety measures.
HPR arranged a drag racing event in conjunction with Bahria Town sponsored by PTCL, the much hyped event was looked upon as the best drag racing event ever organized in Pakistan. Sadly things went bad
when the driver of 800 bhp supra lost control of  his car and crashed into
the people who were standing on the footpath, the cars were considered
the fastest RWD drag cars of Pakistan but the driver lost control and 5
 innocent lives were lost.

This unfortunate incident has disgraced drag racing scene in Pakistan. The Pakistani media launched a fact less propaganda against racing without determining the real cause of the accident. The racing community is deeply sad and shocked by this incident, nobody races to kill it is done for the sake of entertainment and sports.

The government and concerned authorities should recognize drag racing as proper sports, they should build circuits and drag strips and provide grooming grounds for the talented. Many people love car racing , they want to see fast cars, we have so much talent which just needs support and resources to be up there to compete. These proper race drivers will have a positive impact on our economy because if the drivers have the caliber to represent their country all over the world, it would be a great honor !! Who knows a Pakistani might come up and up hold Pakistans name in international racing arena.
